A Tamil mother in Jaffna has reportedly handed her 15-year-old son to the Sri Lankan police, stating that he has become addicted to heroin.
The heart-breaking move, which was reported in the Tamil press, comes amidst a growing concern over illegal drug use and addiction across the North-East. With a lack of support for those suffering from drug addiction, families are left with almost nowhere to turn for help.
As many as 10-drug related deaths are reported to have occurred in Jaffna within the span of the last three months.
Responding to rising reports of drug addiction, the Youth Organization for Health called for young people to be provided counselling and proper medication instead of arrests or detention.
Issuing a statement, earlier today, the organisation acknowledged that drug abuse is a serious problem, particularly with Tamil youth in the Northern Province.
The group went on to request that Sri Lankan police provides the necessary counselling, mental health and medical support for those suffering from drug addiction, rather than just arresting them.
“We all need to be aware that drug use and drug dealing are two different things,” it said.
In other areas across the North-East, Tamils have alleged that criminal gangs have colluded with the Sri Lankan security forces to carry out activities such as illegal drug dealing.
