• Sri Lanka failed to investigate other mass graves - TNA MP

    <p>Sri Lanka has failed to investigate a mass grave of over 80 skeletons discovered in Mannar in 2014, a TNA MP has accused.</p> <p>While commending efforts to investigate the mass grave in Mannar town in the Sathosa retail premises, excavation of which has unearthed over 200 skeletons, including those of children, TNA MP Charles Nirmalanathan said that other sites in the district have been ignored or even covered up.</p>
  • Sri Lankan army attempts to formally seize occupied land in Mullaitivu
    <p>The Sri Lankan army is attempting to appropriate civilian lands in Mullaitivu, over a week after failing to meet a deadline set by the Sri Lankan president to return all occupied land in the North-East.</p> <p>Owners of land in Alampil, which the Sri Lankan army currently illegally occupies, were notified that their land would be surveyed on January 10.</p>
  • 4 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan navy
    <p>The Sri Lankan navy yesterday arrested four Tamil Nadu fishermen for allegedly poaching fish.&nbsp;</p> <p>The fishermen were taken to 'Elara' navy base today and are&nbsp;to be handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Jaffna.&nbsp;</p> <p>Last month over 3000 Indian fishermen were chased away by the Sri Lankan navy and eight fishermen arrested.&nbsp;</p>

    A Sri Lankan army truck killed three civilians on Tuesday morning, during a road accident in Iyakkachchi, Palai. 

    The army truck collided into an auto rickshaw. 

  • CID investigators discover plot to 'assassinate' investigator of Sri Lankan navy crimes - JDS

    Investigators within the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have uncovered a plot hatched by senior naval officers to kill the chief investigator and several key witnesses in high profile cases of abduction, torture and extrajudicial killing, reports JDS.

    One such case details the abduction and murder 11 Tamil males in the suburbs of Colombo.

  • Another militarised Christmas in the Tamil homeland

    The Sri Lankan military continued with its militarisation of the North-East over the Christmas period, with a series of events across the Tamil homeland during the festive season last month.

    Since occupying the North-East, the military has involved itself into several aspects of civilian life in the region, despite opposition from local civil society and political representatives.

  • Norwegian PM apologises for ‘way that the conflict in Sri Lanka ended up’

    Norway’s prime minister acknowledged that her country’s role in mediating a peace process in Sri Lanka was unsuccessful and apologised for “for the way that the conflict in Sri Lanka ended up”.

    Speaking to reporters in India, Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg said that “I’m sorry to say I don’t think our Sri Lanka efforts led to a big success”.

    “I’m still sorry for the way that the conflict in Sri Lanka ended up,” she added.

  • Cases against former NPC members adjourned
    <p>Two court cases against former Northern Provincial Council members, T Ravikaran and M K Shivajilingham, have been adjourned today.&nbsp;</p> <p>The NPC member, T Ravikaran, and six others were arrested for participating in a protest against illegal fishing by Sinhala fishermen in Mullaitivu on August 2.&nbsp;</p>

    The former advisor to President Maithripala Sirisena and presidential media director, Dr Suren Raghavan has been appointed the new governor to the Northern Province, replacing Reginald Cooray.

  • Sri Lanka to face milk powder shortage – Sunday Times

    Sri Lanka is to face a shortage of milk powder following a decision by several leading companies to suspend milk powder imports, due to rising costs, the Sunday Times reports. 

    Several milk powder company heads told the Sunday Times that the government has not allowed them to increase the price of milk powder to consumers, leaving them with no choice but to “stop imports and also stop selling existing stocks of whole milk powder”.

  • SLPP councillor arrested over October violence in Colombo
    <p>A Colombo Municipal Councillor with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has been arrested over violence in the capital last October, where a protestor was shot dead amid&nbsp;political turmoil on the island.</p> <p>Councillor Kulathissa Deeganage was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) in connection with the violence outside the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) premises in Dematagoda.</p>
  • Governor calls off Kilinochchi flooding probe
    <p>The Northern Province's governor, Reginald Cooray has faced criticism after he called off a probe into reports of negligence causing flooding in Kilinochchi.</p> <p>The probe, which was to be headed by Professor S Sivakumar of the University of Jaffna's Engineering Faculty, was set up amid reports Iranamadu tank was allowed to overfill before all the sluice gates were opened at once.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
