Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial Council C V Wigneswaran revealed details of plans to assassinate both him and Tamil National Alliance leader R Sampanthan, reports Ceylon Today.
Justice Wigneswaran said he received an email in Sinhala and a phone call from a man in Balapitiya, who detailed an assassination plot to hire a contract killer to assassinate Mr Sampanthan for a sum of Rs 25 million. The LTTE was to be blamed for the killing.
"I told him that I will look into it and send a complaint to IGP with a copy of the email and would also give the President a copy of what I send the IGP,” said Justice Wigneswaran. I told them it was my duty to bring such matters to their notice."
However, just days ago, the man called Justice Wigneswaran again and said the Sri Lankan TID was now harassing him for alerting the authorities.
"He had asked the informant as to why he was helping a Tamil and that he should be ashamed for being a traitor by trying to help a Tamil,” said the chief minister. “I brought that matter too to the notice of IGP personally. The complainant's name, address and phone number have already been given. The IGP promised to look into it. I presume he will send me a report soon".
Earlier this month Sinhala protestors carried placards during a demonstration brandishing death threats to the Northern Province Chief Minister. The Northern Provincial Council passed a resolution calling for an investigation into the death threats, with its chairman CVK Sivagnanam requesting additional security.
