Thousands of Vanni IDPs affected by heavy rain

Thousands of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in the Kilinochchi district are affected by heavy rains.

Around 15,600 people, who have been displaced since before the end of the armed conflict 6 years ago, are suffering due to the rains affecting their temporary shelters, in which they were resettled at the end of the armed conflict.

Concerns by the IDPs were heard by the Kilinochchi District Secretariat, who held a national disaster committee meeting.

The assistant director of the district disaster management committee, Mr Kogulathas, warned of further risk of flooding in Iranaimadu, Akkarayankulam, Thattuvankotti, Pannakandy, Murasumottai, Mukkomban, Poonary, and the Pachchilaipalli.
