Sri Lanka’s ruling party fractures over leadership question

Amidst Sri Lanka’s ongoing crisis, fractures emerge within Sri Lanka’s governing party as chairman of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Prof. G.L Peiris, rebuke’s the general secretary’s claim that the SLPP would support Ranil Wickremesinghe’s bid for the Presidency.

In a letter to the general secretary, Sagara Kariyawasam, he asked:

  • Under what authority the decision was made and what provisions of the party’s constitution permitted this?
  • When and where was the meeting in which party members agreed to this support?
  • How a candidate was chosen and who had supported the decision?

Peiris criticised the support for Wickremesinghe, an outsider to the party, whilst a party member  Dullas Alahapperuma had just announced his bid for the top office. Sri Lankan parliament is set to vote for a new President on 20 July.
