UNHRC resolution calls for an international judicial action and sanctions against North Korea

The United Nations Human Rights Council, yesterday, adopted a resolution urging the international community to back an international criminal investigation against individuals accountable for atrocities in North Korea, whilst considering targeted sanctions.

The resolution urged steps to be taken to refer North Korea to an international judicial process, “in order that those responsible for human rights violations including those that may amount to crimes against humanity, are held to account.”

Commenting on the resolution, the Geneva director of Human Rights Watch, Julie De Rivero, said,

“You couldn’t expect a stronger resolution. The package as a whole is unprecedented.”

The resolution follower recommendations form the Commission of Inquiry that was recently complete in North Korea. Speaking after the vote, the European Union ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Mariangala Zappia, outlined that the International Criminal Court in the Hague would be the preferred option for prosecuting those accountable for crimes in North Korea.a
