BTF 'dismayed' by draft resolution, urges Cameron to honour promises

In a damning critique of the draft UNHRC resolution released yesterday by the US, UK and other co-sponsors, the British Tamils Forum said it was "dismayed", describing the draft resolution text as a "painful slap on the face" to the Tamil victims awaiting justice.

"The insubstantial draft resolution on Sri Lanka that was released yesterday at the United Nations Human Rights council (UNHRC) has greatly disappointed and shocked the Tamil people," said the BTF, adding that the draft resolution "effectively calls for more of the same" and Sri Lanka had "inexplicably been given yet more time and space".

Highlighting the pledge by the British Prime Minister David Cameron during the Commonwealth Leaders' meet last year, to call for an international investigation if Sri Lanka should fail to complete its own by the UNHRC's March session, the BTF said it "urges the UK government to heed the repeated requests of the Human Rights High Commissioner and to honour David Cameron’s promise to the British Tamil community."

Reiterating its call for "an International Independent Investigation into war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide", the BTF pointed out that this was the "collective call of all Tamil organisations across the world.
