Hundreds of Tamils in Trincomalee marked Maaveerar Naal at the site of a destroyed LTTE cemetery in Aalankulam, Sampur.

Maaveerar Naal was commemorated across Jaffna today in spite of heavy flooding and rainfall in the district. 

Thousands of Tamils have gathered at the Kanagapuram Thuyilum Illum, Kilinochchi, the site of a destroyed LTTE cemetery, to pay tribute to fallen Tamil fighters.

Tamils held commemorations in Vavuniya to mark Maaveerar Naal despite the heavy rainfall. 

Tamils gathered at the grounds near Eechankulam Thuyilum Illam to pay their respects for fallen LTTE cadres as the Sri Lankan army now occupy the land where thousands of LTTE bodies were buried. 

Traders in Puthukkudiyirippu have closed their businesses today to mark Maaveerar Naal, joining the wider Tamil homeland in remembrance.

Despite the torrential rains and impending cyclone which is expected to make landfall in the Eastern coast within the next 12 hours, preparations are underway for Maaveerar Naal commemorations. These images are from Nallur and vVsuvamadu.

Despite severe flooding following the landfall of cyclone Fengal, preparations for Maaveerar Naal continue across Tamil Eelam. 

According to  Disaster Management Center, a total of 192,036 individuals in the North-East have been impacted by the torrential rains and the impact of Cyclone Fengal as it approaches the Island from the Bay of Begnal. The DMC in its most recent situation report notes that 129,531 individuals have been affected in Ampara, Batticaloa, and Trincomalee while 62505 individuals have been affected in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar and Vavuniya. 

Local residents and volunteers are making the final preparations for Maaveerar Naal commemorations in Mullaitivu this morning.  Red and yellow flags are being erected on Mullaitivu beach despite the heavy rains and floods that have hit the North-East this week. 

Newspapers across the Tamil homeland marked Maaveerar Naal – Great Heroes’ Day – as Tamils around the world paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the liberation struggle.

Several also carried stories on the marking of LTTE leader Veluppillai Prabhakaran’s 70^th birthday yesterday.
