Maaveerar Naal commemorated in Jaffna

Maaveerar Naal was commemorated across Jaffna today in spite of heavy flooding and rainfall in the district.

Chatty

A remembrance event was held at Chatty Thuyilum Illam where lamps were lit by a monument erected with the broken remnants of destroyed graves. Families laid flowers and offerings in front of photographs of their relatives who sacrificed their lives.

A lamp was lit by the parents of three fallen LTTE cadres, one of whom was a Black Tiger.

Kodikamam

Tamils gathered in Kodikamam to pay their respects to fallen LTTE cadres.

Kandaswamy, the father of three fallen LTTE cadres lit the sacrificial lamp.

Koppay

Maaveerar families and local residents were forced to commemorate their loved ones outside Koppay Thuyilum Illam as the land is now occupied by the Sri Lankan military.

In July 2010, the Sri Lankan army bulldozed the graves at Koppay Thuyilum Illam where the bodies of over 2,000 fighters were buried and built an army base on top of it.

Former Northern Provincial Council member N Shivajilingham  lit a flame at the native home of Lt Shankar, the first LTTE cadre to sacrifice their life in the liberation struggle.

Nallur

Despite the flooding in Nallur, Shivajilingham and others paid tribute to Lt Col Thileepan at his memorial.

Lt Col Thileepan, a political wing leader of the LTTE, was also honoured at his memorial in Nallur, Jaffna earlier in the day.  In September 1987, Thileepan fasted to death in a protest appealing to the Indian government to honour pledges made to the Tamil people.
