Swedish Tamils raised awareness on the killing of tens of thousands of Tamil civilians during the final stages of the armed conflict in 2009. Members of Tamil Youth Organisation Sweden (TYO-Sweden), and Swedish Tamil Forum (STF) handed out leaflets detailing the genocide faced by Eelam Tamils, in universities, town centres and within the central part of Stockholm. Local Swedish people were moved greatly by the accounts of Tamils who had perished, and shared in the remembrance events by lighting candles.

Hundreds of German Tamils marched in the capital of North-Rhine-Westphalia state to commemorate the Mullivaikal massacre. The march ended outside the local parliament building in the city and saw several speakers. The sister of the late Brigadier Theeban lit the sacrifial flame ahead of the event.
