Tamils brave heavy rain and winds to mark Maaveerar Naal in Mullaitivu

Tamils gathered and commemorated Maaveerar Naal across the district of Mullaitivu, including demonstrations at Thevipuram Thuyilum Illam in Visuvamadu, paying respects to the tens of thousands of fallen Tamils who fought for self-determination.

At Mullivaikkal, the site of the 2009 genocide and a region in which thousands of Tamil fighters were killed, commemoration events took place despite extremely heavy wind and rain.

Similar scenes were seen at Alampil, where despite the torrential downpour, hundreds still gathered at the thuyilum illam to commemorate Maaveerar Naal.

The rain did not prevent thousands turning up to Mulliyavali, where they lay flowers and lit lamps to remember their war dead.

Families gathered in Alankulam to remember those who gave their lives to the liberation struggle.

Private commemorations, such as the one pictured at a home in Mullaitivu below, also took place across the North-East as a cyclone swept through the Tamil homeland.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
