Police file case against former NPC member over LTTE leader birthday commemoration

November 26, 2018

Sri Lankan police on Tuesday filed a case against the former Northern Provincial Council member, M K Shivajilingam for marking the birthday of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leader, V Prabhakaran last year.

Shivajilingam attempted to mark Prabhakaran's birthday in his hometown of Theeruvil, Valvettithurai on November 26, 2018 when he was stopped by police, who detained him briefly and warned a case would be filed against him.

Now over 5 months later police have filed a case under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) for being in possession of Prabhakaran's photograph and other related banners, as well as celebrating his birthday.

The summons and case come just days after two Jaffna university students were arrested and detained under the PTA for being possession of the Prabhakaran photograph.

The summons instructs Shivajilingam to be appear before Point Pedro Magistrate court on May 31, 2019.
