Militarisation: soldiers teach Tamil children volleyball

The Sri Lankan army continued its intrusion into civilian life in the Tamil homeland, organising a volleyball camp in Mullaitivu last week.

More than 300 volleyball players attended the camp, where an official Sri Lankan military website says “Army trainers assisted and coached them giving instructions and guidelines for a superb game”.

It went on to state the players were “given impetus” by the military, whilst senior officers oversaw the proceedings.

The latest event comes as the Sri Lanka army continues with its militarisation of the region, despite repeated calls from local civil society and politicians for demilitarisation.
