The Sri Lankan military continued to consolidate its presence in the Tamil homeland, announcing that yet another building had been constructed at its headquarters in Jaffna.

The army declared open a “newly-constructed two-storied mess building for Warrant Officers & Sergeants” in a ceremony last week, which saw the head of the security forces in Jaffna cut the opening ribbon.
“The construction erected through the Army funds cost Rs. 20 M was a much-needed facility for a long time at the SFHQ-J premises,” reported an official military website.
The building marks yet another construction by the military, which continues to exert its presence in the region. The military has occupied the Jaffna peninsula since 1995, when it launched a massive military operation to recapture the region, displacing at least half a million Tamil men, women and children, in what has since been dubbed the ‘Jaffna Exodus’.
