The fourth day of Maaveerar remembrance week was marked in Jaffna today with events taking place in Velanai and Kodikamam.
Velanai
The Tamil National Action Group and the Island Memorial Committee organised a solemn commemoration in Velanai, Jaffna, to honour the parents and relatives of fallen heroes.
The ceremony began with the families being escorted from Velanai Thuraiyur Junction to the Velanai Aiyanar Community Center, accompanied by the sound of auspicious instruments.
At the memorial hall, where the portraits of the heroes were displayed, a public flame was lit, and floral garlands were placed as heartfelt tributes were offered. In a further gesture of respect, saplings were presented to honour the parents and relatives of the fallen cadres.
Another event was held at a monument at Vangalavadi junction in Velanai where the parents of LTTE cadres and other residents laid flowers for the Tamil fighters.
Kodikamam
Similar commemorations were held at the Kodikamam Maveerar Thuyilum Illam where the Sri Lankan military’s 522nd Brigade headquarters is now based. A flame was lit outside the Thuyilum Illam as it is now under the control of Sri Lanka's military.
Thuyilum Illams - or resting homes - were built by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to house the bodies of fallen cadres. However, all of these were either destroyed during the armed conflict or after by the Sri Lankan army.
