The Tamil homeland marked the commencement of Maaveerar Remembrance Week today, paying tribute to the fallen heroes of the Tamil Eelam liberation struggle in the run up to November 27.
KodikamamThuyilum Illam
Despite heavy rain, several commemoration events were held across Jaffna this week. A solemn ceremony occurred at the Kodikamam Heroes' Remembrance place, where relatives gathered besides the shattered tombstones of their loved ones that they had gathered. The event began with the lighting of a ceremonial flame by C. Sivanesan, the brother of four fallen LTTE heroes.
The ceremony witnessed participation from representatives of political parties, members of public organizations, and the general public, all of whom lit flames and laid flowers to honour the heroes.
The run up to November 27th, marked as Maveerar Naal orHeroes' Day, is a significant period for Eelam Tamils, as they remember and honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice in their struggle for self-determination. Events like these are deeply rooted in Tamil identity and history, reflecting the enduring legacy of those remembered during this week.
As the week unfolds, commemorations are expected to continue across the Tamil homeland and in diaspora communities worldwide.
Chatty Thuyilum Illam
A commemoration also took place at the Chatty Thuyilum Illam - or Heros' Resting Place - in the Jaffna district. The events commenced with a poignant ceremony at the destroyed cemetery, where individuals gathered to pay their respects to the fallen heroes. Floral tributes were laid at the memorial as a mark of respect and solidarity.
Kilinochchi
Meanwhile in Kilinochchi, the parents of fallen heroes were honoured at a ceremony on Thursday.
Amongst those in attendance was recently re-elected Tamil parliamentarian S Shritharan.
