Economic crisis dampens New Year festivities for Tamils

Storekeepers of clothing outlets and vendors selling firecrackers across the North-East said there was a noticeable decline in sales this year as Tamils celebrated the New Year, amidst the high cost of living and ongoing economic turmoil.

Traders also spoke of how sales struggled and how they could not increase prices despite facing losses, as people could simply not afford them as economic hardships continued.

Despite the financial difficulties faced, HIndu religious ceremonies and other festivities did take place to herald the Tamil New Year

A special pooja was held at the Chandirasekarp Pillayar Kovil in Nallur with several devotees gathered early to seek the blessings. Many of those gathered also led the chariot amidst chants and prayers.

Special pooja was held at  Ketheeswaram temple (also known as the Thiruketheeswaram temple) in Mannar to herald the new year. Several devotees gathered and took part in the pooja.

Tamils also welcomed the new year with religious observances and rituals at the Vavuniya Hindu Temple. Rituals were performed at the Sri Siththi Vinayagar Temple, one of the oldest temples in Vavuniya.

On top of the economici crisis, the Sri Lankan military occupation also organised its own festivities in the North-East.
