Another militarised Tamil New Year in Eelam

The Sri Lankan military carried out a series of events across the North-East, as the occupation marked both Tamil and Sinhala new year.

In Jaffna, the Consulate General of India in Jaffna, the Additional Secretary of the Presidential Secretariat in Jaffna and government officials took part in a festival organised by the Sri Lankan army.

Uniformed soldiers oversaw the event that took place at the Duraiappah Stadium in Jaffna.

A similar event took place in Poonakary, organized by the 552 Infantry Brigade in collaboration with Sri Lanka Police and the local Divisional Secretariat.

The Sri Lankan military continues to occupy the North-East, where tens of thousands of troops continue to be stationed. It remains one of the most militarised places in the world.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
