Tamil students studying at universities in Copenhagen and Odense in Denmark, held events last week to commemorate fallen Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres. 

The Tamil Eelam national flag was raised at the events and students lit candles in remembrance of the cadres who sacrificed their lives. 

Preparations are underway at Vakarai Thuyilum Illam in Batticaloa ahead of Maaveerar Naal which will take place on Wednesday. 

Former Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) MP Selvarajah Kajendren was present alongside a group of volunteers. 

Sri Lanka's president Anura Kumara Dissanayake has appointed retired general Aruna Jayasekara as deputy defence minister - a man who oversaw Sri Lankan troops as they raped minors in Haiti and was a platoon commander as the state crushed an insurgency led by Dissanayake’s party, the JVP.

Following a visit to the North, China’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong visited Kaluvankerni, a Tamil village in the Eastern Province which he has travelled to previously, as he pledged further financial aid aimed at improving livelihoods in the region.

Sri Lanka’s Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala confirmed that restrictions would be put in place as Tamils look to observe Maaveerar Naal, or Great Heroes’ Day, on November 27, including the display of any photographs.

The third day of Maaveerar remembrance week was marked by Tamils outside Koppay Thuyilum Illam which is now occupied by the Sri Lankan army. 

A memorial dedicated to the tens of thousands of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres was unveiled today in Nallur, Jaffna to mark the third day of Maaveerar remembrance week. 

Students at the University of Jaffna marked day three of Maaveerar remembrance week on campus today. 

The Tamil nation, in the homeland and in the diaspora, holds steadfastly to records of the liberation struggle. The well-known dates and the lesser known dates are tirelessly observed. Heroes are canonised in the Maaveerar Naal calendar. But with the destruction of LTTE records and cemeteries, it becomes inevitable that some names are lost to us, at least momentarily. The record of Muslim fighters remains incomplete. Their contribution to the Tamil struggle for liberation is often overlooked in the mainstream commemoration of Maaveerar Naal.
