Jaffna exhibition commemorates LTTE commander Colonel Kittu

An exhibition commemorating Colonel Kittu, one of the most prominent senior leaders of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, was held in Jaffna this week.

The exhibition took place at Kittu Park, a site named in remembrance of the LTTE commander, and drew members of the public who gathered to view displays documenting his life and political trajectory.

Posters exhibited at the venue traced Colonel Kittu’s role within the LTTE, highlighting his rise as a senior commander and his significance within the Tamil liberation struggle. The material focused on key moments in his life, including his leadership responsibilities and his place within the broader history of Tamil armed resistance.

Sathasivam Krishnakumar alias Colonel Kittu, rose to public prominence as the LTTE’s Jaffna Commander from 1985-1987 and was based in the Paduvankarai region during the first phase of the war. He was later appointed head of the LTTE’s International Secretariat in London and was on his way home from the UK when his ship was intercepted.

Colonel Kittu and nine other LTTE cadres, committed suicide after being surrounded by Indian navy warships in 1993.

He remains a widely recognised figure among Tamils and his legacy continues to be commemorated across the Tamil homeland and diaspora through memorial events, exhibitions, and educational initiatives, despite sustained attempts by the Sri Lankan state to suppress public remembrance of LTTE figures.
