Jaffna University student to be interrogated by TID for 'giving information to Human Rights Commission'

Pararajasingam Sujeevan, a student at the University of Jaffna and journalist, has been summoned by the Sri Lankan Terrorism Investigation Department (TID) for an interrogation. 

Officials from the Kilinochchi Crime Prevention Department arrived at the residence of Sujeevan earlier this week and delivered the summons issued by the TID from Colombo. 

Uniform, ID tag and remains of LTTE cadre uncovered at Muhamalai

The remains of an LTTE fighter, alongside their uniform and identification tag were uncovered in Muhumalai this week, as demining work continued in the region.

The findings were made in the region of the former Muhamalai Forward Defence Line, an area that saw intense battles between the LTTE and Sri Lankan security forces.

Wigneswaran to boycott forum unless Sri Lankan military is uninvited

Tamil parliamentarian and leader of the Tamil Makkal Kootani (TMK) C V Wigneswaran said that he would not attend a forum on “Water, Environment and Agriculture Security” in the Northern province unless the Sri Lankan military was uninvited, as he hit back against continued militarisation of the Tamil homeland.

In a letter to the Governor of the Northern Province, Wigneswaran expressed his regret that the upcoming forum “is arranged in collaboration with the Office of the Commander, Sri Lanka Army”.

Tamil political prisoner acquitted after 15 years in Sri Lankan jail

A Tamil political prisoner who has been in detention for 15 years, has been released from jail this month after being acquitted of all charges.

45-year-old Thevarasa Sivapalan was arrested in Wattala in 2006 by Sri Lanka’s Terrorrism Investigation Division, who claimed he was smuggling arms to Colombo.

He was detained under Sri Lanka’s draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

China looks North as ambassador visits Tamil homeland

China’s ambassador to Sri Lanka continued his tour of the Tamil homeland today, visiting the historic Jaffna Library and Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, as well as meeting with fishing communities in the peninsula and in Mannar.

The visit comes as Beijing looks to “to maintain contacts between Jaffna and China in the near future,” according to Ambassador Qi Zhenhong who addressed reporters whilst visiting the Jaffna library earlier today.

Chennai court acquits four Eelam Tamils suspected of 'reviving LTTE'

A special court in Poonamallee, Chennai, has acquitted four Eelam Tamil refugees who were arrested on the suspicion that they were attempting to "revive" the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). 

The judge ruled that the prosecutors did not produce sufficient evidence against the arrested in order for the proceedings against them to go ahead.

People for Equality and Relief in Lanka (PEARL) welcomed the US sanctions on two Sri Lankan military officials for human rights violations and encouraged "the sanctioning of further high ranking officials" who are accused of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

Last week, the US barred both Chandana Hettiarachchi, a Sri Lankan naval intelligence officer, involved in the ‘Trinco 11’ disappearances and Sunil Ratnayake, a soldier guilty of murdering at least 8 Tamils, from entering the US. 

Foreign investments not as fast we expected' - Sri Lanka's Finance minister admits as discontent grows

Sri Lanka's finance minister Basil Rajapaksa speaking in parliament, has admitted that the country is not receiving foreign investments as quickly as anticipated, as mass resignations across Sri Lanka's Board of Investments signalled discontent within the regime.

Sri Lanka currently faces a foreign exchange crisis which has been exacerbated by an estimated Rs. 1.6 trillion loss in revenue due to the pandemic and government mismanagement. Loan payments in excess of USD $1.5 billion dollars due next year are at risk of default due to dwindling foreign reserves.
