The Sri Lankan police have announced that legal action will be initiated against former Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa and a group of supporters over an incident that disrupted rehearsals for the Sri Lanka's "Victory Day" ceremony near the War Heroes’ Memorial in Battaramulla on May 18.

A group of Sinhala Buddhist extremists attempted to disrupt a peaceful remembrance event to mourn "war victims" held at Wellawatte beach in Colombo on Monday, with participants subjected to racist and misogynistic abuse before Sri Lankan police intervened to prevent violence.

Tamils in London demonstrated through the city to mark 17 years since the genocide at Mullivaikkal. 

The rally began at Parliament Square, where Tamils staged weeks-long protests in 2009, urging the international community to intervene and halt Sri Lanka’s military offensive.

US Congress members expressed solidarity with Tamils commemorating Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day and renewed calls for justice and accountability. 

US Congressman Herb Conaway stated that he continues to "support a just and lasting political solution based on the Tamil people’s right to self determination."

Amnesty International has stated that Sri Lanka’s “entrenched impunity” continues to undermine prospects for justice, reconciliation, and durable peace, as the Tamil nation marks the 17th anniversary of the Tamil genocide. 

A senior leader of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the massacre of Tamils in Mullivaikkal was the "largest genocide carried out in a single day in world history" and referred to May 18 as a “Black Day”, in a statement marking Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day.

University of Jaffna students marked the 17th anniversary of the Tamil genocide on campus today. 

The event began with a moment of silence for the Tamil people who were killed in Sri Lanka's genocidal offensive during the final phase of the armed conflict.
