University of Jaffna students marked the 17th anniversary of the Tamil genocide on campus today.
The event began with a moment of silence for the Tamil people who were killed in Sri Lanka's genocidal offensive during the final phase of the armed conflict.
Flowers were laid and candles were lit beside a monument that is dedicated to the victims of the genocide. Mullivaikkal Kanji was served at the end of the event to remember the suffering endured by Tamils in the 'No Fire Zones'.
This monument on campus premises was built after the original one was bulldozed by Sri Lankan authorities in January 2021. It was rebuilt and officially unveiled in April 2021 following widespread outrage in the homeland and the international community.
