Hundreds of Tamil Canadians held a car rally this week demanding Canada and the international community to recognise the Tamil people's right to self-determination and to send Sri Lankan war criminals to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The car rally saw hundreds of cars from Brampton and Scarborough make their way through Dundas Square to downtown Toronto.
Protestors carried banners that read: “Recognise Tamil People’s Right to Self-Determination”, “Remove Seven Decades Occupation of Tamil Nation”, “Send Genociders, including Rajapaska brothers, to ICC".
Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Mahinda Rajapaksa both oversaw the final phase of the armed conflict in 2009, which saw the massacre of tens of thousands of Tamils.
Instead of the “GoHomeGota” slogan widely seen on signs of Sri Lankan protestors in response to the recent economic crisis, Canadian Tamils carried banners with hashtags centred around genocidal prosecution during their protest: #Gota2ICC #TamilNation #TamilGenocide #GotaWarCriminal.
The rally concluded at the U.S Consulate office hours later and ended with the demand to continue their struggle for recognition and liberation of an independent state for Tamils in the northeast.
