Responding to the ongoing political and economic crisis in Sri Lanka, the Tamil National People’s Front has signed a motion of no confidence, demanding that the Rajapaksa administration stands down.
The statement comes as Sri Lanka defaulted on its US$ 51 billion worth of international debt. Despite the dire economic situation which has seen a severe shortage in food, fuel and medicines, Sri Lanka’s President has refused to resign.
Gajen Ponnambalam, leader of the TNPF, has slammed the government's insistence on a "unitary state", arguing it has led to the "appalling situation to which this country has fallen".
Today we signed on to the No Confidence Motion against the Government of Sri Lanka. We are yet to sign on to the Impeachment Motion against the President, as it was not prepared fully for us to sign on to. pic.twitter.com/CcqQi1aezo
