Sri Lankan police allegedly recover 'high-powered LTTE claymore explosives' in Varani

Sri Lankan polices officers attached to the Kodikamam police station in Jaffna have allegedly recovered claymore explosives that they claim to be "produced by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)" in a forested area in Varani.

According to the police department, the Captain Bhawan (IA)-99 claymore device was an "explosive high-powered device produced by the LTTE". Police officials stated that it "may have been brought into the forest a few days ago and hidden". No arrests have been made so far in connection with the incident.

Sri Lankan officials have repeatedly attempted to link the LTTE or former LTTE cadres to several criminal investigations following the armed conflict.

Human rights groups have stressed that former LTTE fighters are victimised and harassed by Sri Lankan state forces, with many calling out such discoveries as a ploy to retain the heavy militarisation across the North-East.
