Sri Lanka’s opposition has objected to police investigating into the brawls which took place in the country’s parliament during its political crisis, claiming violations of parliamentary privilege and taking issue with ‘outsider’ intervention into the incidents.

Headed by Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, UPFA MPs appealed to the speaker Karu Jayasuriya to suppress CID investigations into the brawls, and also met with the Sri Lankan prime minister to discuss the issue.

UPFA MP Dinesh Gunawardena said “we are interested in safeguarding the rights of the MPs. The Prime Minister agreed that we should not allow matters covered by our privileges to be dealt with by the Police,” the Island reports.

Also according to the Island, Mahinda Rajapaksa said that it was not proper for external parties such as Police to investigate incidents inside the Chamber.
