The Sri Lankan military collaborated with a Jaffna-based company to hold job interviews for unemployed Tamils in Kilinochchi this week, as the armed forces continue to interfere with civilian life in the Tamil North-East.
The military announced that the “conduct of interviews [were] launched under the supervision of Major General Vijitha Ravipriya, General Officer Commanding, 57 Division with the able support of the 573 Brigade Commander”.
The job interviews, carried out in Kilinochchi, were for jobs with the Jaffna-based ‘Harry Constructions Private Limited’.
It comes after census figures from Sri Lanka’s census department last month revealed that unemployment has almost doubled over the past two years across the Jaffna district, as Tamils across the North-East continue to struggle with their livelihoods.
The military meanwhile has continued to involve itself in civilian life in the region, despite opposition from locals and pledges by the government to demilitarise the region.
