Sri Lankan navy arrests asylum seekers fleeing island

The Sri Lankan navy declared that it has arrested a group of asylum seekers who were attempting to flee the island on the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Sri Lankan P475 Fast Attack Craft intercepted a fishing vessel that was carrying 9 people on board, according to a military website. The group was made up of 5 men, a woman, 2 boys and a girl.

A tip off received by intelligence personnel reportedly alerted the military to the vessel's departure of the coast of Negombo. The group were subsequently handed over to Sri Lanka's Criminal Investigation Department.
