The former army general, Sarath Fonseka, who oversaw the end of Sri Lanka's armed conflict in 2009 in which tens of thousands of Tamils were massacred by the country's armed forces is to contest the election under his party separately from President Sirisena's 'rainbow coalition'.
Field Marshal Fonseka's Democratic Party, is to contest from Colombo, handing in their nominations on Thursday, reported News First. Nominations were also submitted for Gampaha District.
The mass killing of Tamils in 2009 is currently subject to an UN inquiry, which is due to publish its findings this September.
