Sri Lanka's 'provocative statements vitiate atmosphere' says India

India's External Affairs ministry said Sri Lanka has been making “provocative statements” on the issue of Tamil Nadu fishermen being arrested and attacked by Sri Lankan security forces, amid more arrests this week.

Addressing a press conference last week, India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj spoke on Sri Lanka saying “sometimes, provocative statements are made from their side”.

“We are going to make it clear to them that these provocative statements only vitiate the atmosphere,” she added. “We must only discuss it with the viewpoint that this is a livelihood related issue and this can be solved only through a humanitarian approach.”

Her comments come after the spokesperson for India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said a Sri Lankan minister’s statement vowing not to allow Indian fishermen into Sri Lankan waters was “not helpful”.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka's High Commissioner in India Sudharshan Seneviratne said the answer to the issue was a “bottoms-up solution rather than one imposed from above,” as Sri Lanka arrested more Tamil Nadu fisherment this week.
