Sri Lanka’s president Maithripala Sirisena, speaking to the UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon on Thursday, expressed his intention to attend the 30th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in September.
A statement by the president’s office on Friday, said,
“The president said that he wished to attend the United Nations Human Rights Council session scheduled to begin in September in Geneva after the establishment of the new government in Sri Lanka.”
The September UNHRC session will see the release of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) investigation into Sri Lankan atrocities (OISL). Sirisena has previously rejected the UN investigation, stating that Sri Lanka will deal with the issue internally.
