The leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF) told Sri Lanka’s parliament that the US ambassador in the country had used “psychological barriers” on former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, leaving him “incapable of taking certain decisions”.
In an address to parliament this morning, former Rajapaksa ally Wimal Weerawansa claimed that the influence of the US Ambassador Julie Chung had left Rajapaksa incapacitated.
His remarks come after the war crimes accused former president fled Sri Lanka in the wake of anti-government protests and is currently in Singapore, with rumours he may return to the island soon.
Weerawansa, a notorious Sinhala extremist, also criticised the ‘Aragalaya’ protestors, claiming the demonstration “is a trick to fail this nation”.
“I saw people in Aragalaya saying Prabhakaran is better than the Army, who stood by the people of this country in all situations,” he continued. “How can they say something like that to the army?"
The extremist lawmaker has previously angrily spoken out on several topics including the naming of new gecko species after mythical Sinhala nationalist figure, the Tamil diaspora, Rohingya refugees in Sri Lanka and US personnel on the island.
