UNFGG alliance is not against Rajapaksa says JHU

The UNP led alliance, the United National Front for Good Governance (UNFGG) is not against the former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, said the general secretary of the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), Champika Ranawaka.

“This is not an alliance against Mahinda Rajapaksa. We were prevented from fulfilling certain political reforms, such as the case of appointing members to the Constitutional Council, due to lack of majority in Parliament. So, we decided to form an alliance to fulfil the political reforms promised at the last Presidential election,” Mr Ranawaka was quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

He added however, that the alliance "would not allow certain forces that were attempting to turn back the peoples’ mandate at the general elections."

“We know that Mahinda Rajapaksa would not be satisfied with just an MP post or Premiership. We wanted to fight the force which is raising its head against peoples’ mandate,” he added.

The UNFGG was formed earlier this month to contest Sri Lanka's upcoming general election on August 17, and includes the United National Party (UNP), the JHU and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress. The Tamil National Alliance said it would not be joining the alliance.
