The Buddhist festival of Vesak is currently being held in Jaffna, organised by Sri Lanka's security forces.
The first day of the festival was declared open on Sunday by the commander of the security forces in Jaffna, Major General Nandana Udawatta.

Soldiers of all battalions based in Jaffna contributed to organising events to the "Vesak Zone" outside Jaffna Library, the army reported.
The event will conclude on May 6.
Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera in March said all civilian activities by the military in the North-East had ceased.
