Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jaylalithaa has called for the release of 15 Indian fishermen who were arrested by Sri Lankan security forces on Monday night.
Writing to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ms Jayalalithaa called for the “immediate release” of the arrested fishermen.
"I write with a deep sense of anguish that right at the beginning of the fishing season on June 1, after a 45 day fishing ban, 14 fishermen from Tamil Nadu, along with their three fishing boats, have been detained by the Sri Lankan navy," she said.
She called on Mr Modi for his "immediate personal intervention in this issue and request you to direct the ministry of external affairs to take up the matter with the Sri Lankan authorities”.
The fishermen have been remanded until June 12 and are due to be produced before a court in Mannar.
