Sirisena calls for unity in SLFP to prevent Tamils taking up arms

Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena reiterated his commitment to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and called for unity within the party to prevent another armed conflict.

The official President’s Media Division reported Mr Sirisena as telling an audience at the Dharmashoka College in Ambalangoda that he was “ready to stand up to these harassments” he was currently facing.

Mr Sirisena reportedly faces opposition within the party from those loyal to the former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa, who oversaw the final phase of the armed conflict on the island which killed tens of thousands of Tamil civilians.

He went on to call for a “national approach to prevent northern youths taking up arms again” and called for the party to unite behind him.

“Unless we do them now, the eruption of another war will be imminent,” said Mr Sirisena.
