Rajapaksa files nomination for Sri Lankan election

The former president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, filed his nomination to contest the upcoming Sri Lankan parliamentary election on August 17 under the ruling UPFA coalition from the Kurunegala district.

"The former president will be contesting the upcoming General Election from Kurunegala under the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and that he has already signed the nomination papers," Rajapaksa's media coordinator, Rohan Weliwita, was quoted by the PTI as saying on Thursday.

The nomination remains controversial however, as the cabinet spokesperson, Rajitha Senaratne was quoted by the New Indian Express, as saying that Mr Rajapaksa was yet to be approved by the president, Maithripala Sirisena.

Mr Rajapaksa's come back to politics, following his electoral defeat in January to Mr Sirisena, has caused disagreements within the Sri Lankan Freedom Party (SLFP).
