Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa slammed Sri Lanka’s current prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for allowing the “North” to be in “chaos.”
Speaking at the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) inaugural rally, Rajapaksa accused the new government of trying to “sweep away the Rajapaksa’s” like the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) did.
Stressing that his government was able to free the country from "terrorism", Rajapaksa added,
“Not even six months have passed since the UNP came into power and the North is in total chaos. Some have even said that the LTTE rule is preferable to the situation that prevails in the North today.”
Rajapaksa went on to allege that Wickremesinghe had bowed to the LTTE.
“Do you all remember how the current prime minister betrayed the country in 2001. Do you remember how he gave our Army’s intelligence to the LTTE,” he questioned.
The former president accused the new government of reversing the development process in the country, adding,
“Look at what Ranil Wickremesinghe and the current government have done to all the development projects initiated during my tenure? They have been brought to a complete standstill. If in a short period of just six months they can undo all the progress we made in four years, imagine the damage they will do if they are given five years to govern the island?”
