British Tamil university students from across the United Kingdom expressed their support for a protest to be held by the Jaffna University Students' Union (JUSU) and reiterated demands for the immediate release of the United Nations report into mass atrocities in Sri Lanka.
The Tamil Students Initiative (TSI), an inter-university British organisation, said it was in solidarity with the demand for the “United Nations report into mass atrocities committed against the Tamil people to be released without delay and rejecting any notion of a domestic inquiry.”
“With the UN Human Rights council agreeing to delay the release of the OISL report on war crimes until September, the Sri Lankan government have in effect been given more time to continue with their campaign to dismantle Tamil heritage and culture whilst silencing any voices of dissension,” said the TSI statement. “Ongoing disappearances, enforced censorship, and cases of unlawful detainment are testament to this fact.”
The protest, set to take place on Tuesday morning, has received unanimous Tamil support, with backing from across the North-East and diaspora.
“As representatives of Tamil societies and students across the United Kingdom, we endorse the JUSU’s demonstration and its demand for the UN Human Rights Council to release the report on mass atrocities committed against Tamil people without delay,” continued the statement.
“Only with justice can we get progression.”
