Ban Ki-moon backs UN human rights chief’s condemnation of Sri Lanka

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon supported the recent statement made by the High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, in which he slammed Sri Lanka’s refusal to co-operate with a United Nations inquiry into mass atrocities.

The UN will continue to urge Sri Lanka to cooperate with the OHCHR Inquiry on Sri Lanka (OISL), Ban Ki-moon’s deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said while speaking to reporters in New York.

“The Secretary General supports the views of High Commissioner Zeid, and he agrees with High Commissioner Zeid that the Government of Sri Lanka should cooperate. And we will continue to urge that they do so,” Haq said.

Sri Lanka condemned the statement made by Zeid, saying it “denigrated” a democratically elected government.
