Sri Lanka’s controversial minister of public security announced that Sri Lanka’s 600th police station had been opened as the current government continues with its intense militarisation and securitisation of the island.
Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara himself opened the police station in Nungamuva, in the Gampaha District.
The latest security outlet is the 106th station opened under a new program by the minister “to create a society free of fear and suspicion for the people of this country,” according to NewsWire.
Just months ago, Weerasekara announced that 'human rights charges' levelled against police officers in active duty would be dropped if charge sheets against them are not completed within a six-month time frame.

Meanwhile in October 2021, Weerasekara warned the country’s then striking teachers that the government had “destroyed terrorism” and insinuated that it would deal with any disruption in a similar manner.
