Thousands of Eelam Tamils across the Batticaloa district braved floods, with some even travelling by boat, to attend public Maaveerar Naal commemorations at the sites of destroyed LTTE cemeteries earlier today.
Several hundred people gathered at the Vakarai Maaveerar Thuyilum Illam to light lamps and lay flowers before the collected remnants of tombstones they had collected.
At the Thaandiyadi Maaveerar Thuyilum Illam, Tamils braved heavy winds and treacherous weather conditions to gather and remember their fallen heroes.
Earlier in the day, Tamils in Batticaloa were left stranded as floods closed several roads. Regardless, several decided to make the journey to Tharavai Thuyilum Illam by boat, as they gathered to pay respects to those who died in the Tamil liberation struggle.
Students at the Eastern University in Batticaloa, despite many challenges, also remained steadfast in their commitment to honour the fallen heroes and held a ceremony this morning.
