Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe called for the strengthening of the police force at a ceremony in Colombo today.
Speaking at a police ceremony to mark the 151st anniversary of the Sri Lankan police service at Bambalapitiya Police Park Police Field Headquarters, Mr Wickremesinghe said his government had already taken steps to establish “national unity”.
ColomboPage quoted Mr Wickremesinghe as stating “there are no international probes against the government.”
He went on to claim that crime on the island had dropped by 30 percent.
"After the elimination of terrorism we have to combat dangerous drugs and organized criminal gangs," continued the Sri Lankan prime minister.

In his address he said his government would increase the salary of all police officers as well as establish further training programs for the police force. Last week, Sri Lankan Minister of Law and Order Sagala Ratnayake also said the government is to strengthen its Special Task Force officers in order to combat "extremist" threats and "foreign terrorists".
Mr Wickremesinghe’s comments coming following a police crackdown in Jaffna, leading to the arrest of dozens of Tamil youth.
