Sri Lanka has agreed to present a report on the steps it has taken to improve its human rights record under the fourth Universal Periodic Review Cycle of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The review is to be held on 1 February. The Sri Lankan government has responded to the review stating:
“This provides an opportunity to declare the national level steps taken by the member countries to improve the condition of human rights in the member countries and to fulfil the human rights obligations of those countries”.
Following a resolution adopted by the UNHRC in 2006, all Member States must be subjected to a universal periodic review once every four years.
This report follows a damning report by the UN High Commissioner that revealed “deepening militarization and lack of transparency and accountability in governance, which have embedded impunity for serious human rights violations and created an environment for corruption and the abuse of power”.
