Canadian city of Markham to sign friendship agreement with Mullaitivu

Markham City Council passed a motion to enter into a friendship agreement with Mullaitivu in late November. Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial Council C.V. Wigneswaran and Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti will sign the agreement on January 14th, 2017 at the Markham Civic Centre.

The City of Markham’s Culture and Economic Development Department will host a networking event prior to the signing ceremony with 80 to 100 Canadian Tamil business leaders – with a focus on how to do business in both Markham and Mullaitivu.

“Markham is the most diverse municipality in the country, and our Tamil community has played an important role in our continued growth and prosperity,” says Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “Together, we have been developing strong economic and cultural connections with the greater Tamil community throughout Canada and South Asia. This agreement signals our continued commitment to the South Asian community and our shared economic growth and prosperity – in Canada and around the world.” He further stated.

According to Ward 7 Councillor Logan Kanapathi, there are over 30 000 residents of Tamil-origin that live in Markham.
