Buddhist monks protest against changes to Sri Lankan constitution

A group of Sinhala Buddhist monks launched a protest last week, against the prospect of a new Sri Lankan constitution that would deprive Buddhism of holding the “foremost place” on the island.

Alongside other Buddhist devotees, the monks performed a religious ceremony, calling on the Sri Lankan government not to enact any changes to the island’s current constitution.

A memorandum, signed by 104 senior Buddhist monks, had been prepared with several demands. Amongst them was the need to ensure land and police powers and not devolved to the provinces.
