Kerry pledges to end Pakistani drone strikes ‘soon’

The US Secretary of State John Kerry has pledged to end drione strike on militants in Pakistan “very, very soon”, on the last day of his visit to the country.

"I think the programme will end as we have eliminated most of the threat and continue to eliminate it," Mr Kerry said in a television interview.

"The president has a very real timeline and we hope it's going to be very, very soon," he said.

US travel alerts al-Qaeda threat

The US has issued a global travel alert after allegedly receiving an unspecified al-Qaeda threat.

The state department in a statement said there was particularly strong potential for attacks in the Middle East and North Africa and recommended that US citizens be vigilant while travelling abroad.

Tsvangirai calls election as 'null and void'

The Zimbabwean opposition's Movement for Democratic Change leader, Morgan Tsvangirai slammed Wednesday's election as "null and void" and a "huge farce".

Alleging polling day irregularities and vote-rigging by Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF party, Tsvangirai said that over 1 million voters were not being allowed to vote.

UN orders disarmament of Goma

The United Nations’ intervention force in the Democratic Republic of Congo has given residents in Goma 48 hours to disarm and anyone armed beyond that time will be considered a rebel.

"They will be considered an imminent threat of physical violence to civilians and [UN mission in DR Congo] Monusco will take all necessary measures to disarm them, including by the use of force in accordance with its mandate and rules of engagement," a statement by the UN mission in the DR Congo, Monusco, said.

Egyptian security forces have been instructed to end two large Pro-Morsi sit-in protests in Cairo.

The interim cabinet said that the sit-ins represented “a threat to the Egyptian national security and an unacceptable terrorizing of citizens.”

More than 140 pro-demonstrators have already been killed by security forces in violent confrontations in July.

Mid-East peace talks: “final status” agreement in 9 months

The US Secretary of State has announced that Israeli and Palestinian negotiators will aim to achieve a “final status agreement” over the coming 9 months, after talks between the two sides concluded in Washington.

“They are on the table with one simple goal: a view to ending the conflict, ending the claims. Our objective will be to achieve a final status agreement over the course of the next nine months” said Secretary John Kerry at a press briefing.
