Pro- and anti-Assad groups have clashed in Beirut, after a week of factional violence, which hit the coastal town of Tripoli, which left 25 dead.

The European Union has extended targeted sanctions against Russia over the crisis in Crimea, to 12 more individuals.

The latest announcement comes just hours after the US announced similar measures against 11 individuals believed to be in President Putin's inner circle.

The United Nations Human Rights Chief, Navi Pillay, warned today that ethnic rifts between the Christian and Muslim communities in Central African Republic had reached a ‘terrifying level.’

Speaking during her visit to the region, the human rights chief, urged the international community to immediately mobilise the proposed 12000 troop UN peacekeeping force to help halt the ongoing atrocities in the region.
