China follows India into Eelam – but with a Buddhist twist

China’s ambassador to Sri Lanka made his second visit to the North-East last week, just days after India’s finance minister completed her tour of the region – but also stopped off at several controversial Buddhist sites. 

Ambassador Qi Zhenhong travelled to Jaffna, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi on a three-day tour of the region, where he handed out several boxes of donations.

Don't trample on our saints!' - Tamil families demand Sri Lankan army to release occupied LTTE cemetery

A protest was held at Theravil Thuyilum Illam calling on the Sri Lankan authorities to remove their military base which was built over the cemetery for Tamil fighters.

Tamil protesters gathered at Theravil Thuyilum Illam in Mullaitivu which is currently occupied by the SLNG Regiment. The occupation blocks Tamils from accessing the land to pay their respects to their loved ones who are buried there.  

Sri Lanka Cricket suspended by ICC due to political interference

Sri Lankan Cricket’s membership of the International Cricket Council (ICC) has been suspended with immediate effect after the global sporting body found a “serious breach” with regards to political interference in the sport.

A statement released by the ICC said “Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member”.

A group of Tamil political prisoners who had been detained for almost 15 years have been released this morning, after a Sri Lankan court found no evidence linking them to a 2006 explosion in Colombo.

Remembering Raviraj 17 years on

Today marks 17 years since Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP and human rights lawyer, Nadarajah Raviraj was assassinated in Colombo. 

Raviraj was shot in Colombo at close range by unidentified gunmen on a motorbike at around 8:30am on November 10 2006, as he got into his car after giving an interview. The MP died later in hospital. His bodyguard was also killed.
